Student feedback

IMG_0064Since we started our education programme around 20 years ago, we’ve given 1000s of students the skills to lead a more self-reliant, sustainable life, where they can grow and produce their own food and more recently create their own energy sources.

This page is devoted to feedback from people who have completed, and in many cases, had their life changed, by a Permaculture Design Course, or internship with us in the last couple of years.

Internship

DSCF2910I came to Koanga thinking I was doing something as simple as starting an internship, and I’m leaving with the knowledge that my whole life has changed. I’ve loved all the intricate processes  – from planting the seeds into trays, to watching the plants thriving in their beds, their leaves reaching forward to the sun and the bees humming softly in the humid air. I’ve gotten more than I came for. I like a confident gardener and an excellent cook and I know I can stay on this journey of looking after my health and respecting my ancestry whilst being a loving custodian of the land. I give my whole-hearted thanks to Kay and Bob and every single community member that welcomed me into their homes and their lives for the past couple of months…………Cayper

Like all important life events, the internship at Koanga has been challenging. I can see already DSCF2869that it will be a turning point for me. It has clarified and strengthened the path I am on. I really can’t wait to go home and see how all this learning will evolve and take form…….Ari

bee4What a great privilege to spend 10 weeks with Kay Baxter as her intern and student. The experience was rich in learning, both intellectually stimulating and very hands-on.Each day brought new opportunities to grow, both in the garden and in the classroom.
The curriculum provides exposure to wide-ranging concepts and practices. It is well complimented by hands-on learning in the serene setting of Kotare Village.
I came to learn bio-intensive gardening and learn I did. The seed, food and isolation gardens are the setting where not only double-digging and bed-shaping take place, but planting, fertilising and watering too. A thorough, well-rounded experience it is.
Being asigned my own vegetable garden to care for was a highlight, giving me responsibility and ownership of part of the organic, heritage, seed-growing activity of the Institute. Learning about the impact of nutrient-dense food on health and being able to participate in its preparation was a special gift.
Kay’s devotion and dedication to her garden and its needs is the source of her passion and drive – she is multi-faceted, talented and always ready to share her knowledge. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to learn directly from her…… Will

In this beautiful place I have discovered myself again. My life has teresa butterchanged forever and from here-on-in I’ll always be a permaculture girl!
I’ve learned that I no-longer want to be part of mainstream living, that I love community, but value alone-time, and that I love working with animals and growing things.
My plan is to take all this learning and continue to build on it. To continue this wonderful journey that started as an interest and has developed into a passion.

Permaculture Design Course – February 2014

My time at the Koanga Institute was such a special time. I met many wonderful people and I mel creamlearned far more than I had expected. This PDC perfectly combines theory with practice and equips students with the skills they need to become a permaculture designer. The care and knowledge put into the course by the staff at Koanga is incredible. You will not regret taking your Permaculture Design Course with the Koanga Institute…..Josh

10.12.09 006The Koanga Institute is a model of self-sufficient entrepreneurial visionary work. It has a very real approach to permaculture design based on years or REAL experience, real failures and real success.

I could not imagine having found a better place to do my Permaculture Design Course. Anybody IMG_5236can open up a book and read about the principals of permaculture, but the vast amount of real-world knowledge and experience the teachers at Koanga share is incredible…. Not to mention all the theory being taught in the contect of working through the design process so that by the time you finish the course, you will have created your first permaculture design from start to finish. This focus makes Koanga, hands-down, the best place to do your Permaculture Design Course…..Chad

groupIMG_2799_2.1(1)What stands out for me about Koanga is the integrity of the people and the place. We were living and walking the talk – from how we made organic, local, unprocessed and unpackaged food (as much as possible) to how we treated each other and all mucked in.
A lot of my learning happened outside the classroom. Koanga is a special place with special place full of very special people. I found the course really comprehensive and as indepth as we wanted – with time for discussion and debate. One thing I liked was the way the design process for our designs was integrated into the course so we were able to add and modify our designs as we deepened our knowledge. Tim, Bob and Kay were really knowledgeable, each with their own specialties……..Maureen.

I feel so privileged to have spent time with such knowledgeable people. The course was an IMG_4870incredible stimulation of the senses…….Christine

IMG_5187There is a considerable range of information contained in this course that exceeded my expectations. I did not really know beforehand what I would be expected to do throughout the two weeks, but I feel that equipping people with a large amount of knowledge and skill is the main aim of this Permaculture Design Course – as well as helping individuals understand where they may be suited to work in what could be a turbulent future ahead……Matt

“Walk your talk”, is a phrase which really applies to this place and the people around here. Every IMG_6099single aspect of the experience has been teaching us what it is all about – from the ethics and values to day-to-day logistics. It give what no book or distance learning could do.  From the moment you arrive you get to feel the implications of what it is you will be designing. The integrity goes far beyond external things. “Share the surplus” is shown by the generosity of every teacher sharing as much knowledge and experience as is useful to the group. “Earth care” and “people care” are lived every day. The Koanga Institute has made the beauty of permaculture come alive……Carine

IMG_6048I found the practical work based on the design process day-by-day as we learned the theory, very helpful. It has opened up a whole new world in terms of what is possible in transforming our lives in terms of landscapes, trees, veggies, nutrient dense food and community living….Michael

It’s like getting a new pair of glasses where the world has been blown up and there is so much IMG_0064more I can see now. The connection between who we are, the food we eat, our health and happiness can be enhanced and designed by the community and the skills we bring together. There’s a powerful way forward for us using the holistic-management decision-making process to create healthy, regenerative communities…..Dot

One of the most important things about this course is the reflection about how my life is now and what I want it to be in the future. I now have an understanding of the what decisions I need to make to change the course of my life and how I can benefit from and share the knowledge I acquired on this course…..Maria
